Lifelong Learning

I remember some subjects in school were a real struggle. Some were just not a natural fit for me and I had a hard time with the concepts (math). Some were just not interesting at all although I could do it (biology). Everyone has different experiences. But all of us would agree that school involved a lot of willpower. Sometimes even our favorite subjects were not much fun.

Learning about personal finance for most people is akin to eating their least liked vegetable.

That doesn't mean it's not important.

Part of growing up is learning to do what we don't like in order to get a result we like. The corollary is this: if you know where you want to be, decide what it takes to get there.

Where we don't want to be is in a tight financial situation due to lack of knowledge. Discipline in personal finance is a related topic, but I'm speaking now about developing a lifelong habit of learning about personal finance.

We don't need to be experts in technical topics or become experts in math. What we do need is a rough idea of the basic concepts so we aren't dependent on others for guidance in general financial matters.

The world is changing quickly, and that change affects us directly in the area of work, career growth, saving, investing, tax, retirement - every key area of personal finance.

And our needs change through time.

So what do you do if you really don't like the topic of personal finance, but you know you need to learn more?

The good news is that there are many more ways to learn than before. You don't have to get a thick boring book and a couple of highlighters and settle in with a pot of coffee. You can find a way that suits your learning style. The key is to internalize the concepts for yourself, so you can learn to distinguish the good information from the bad.

You just have to decide that you will do it, no matter how you decide to learn. It's crucial that you know the basics for yourself.

The payoff will make the effort well worth it.
