Be Generous Wisely

We live in an interconnected world. There is a moral expectation that we are aware of the needs around us. How we work toward a solution varies. There are many opinions today about how whether we should push for equal outcomes for everyone. There are also diverging viewpoints on exactly how to help other people who are struggling or just less fortunate.

But there is no doubt that we have a moral obligation to help others. We should help not to feel good about it but because it's the right thing to do.

But how to do it? This is deeply personal, but here are some guidelines.

1. Don't assume giving always has to be about money. There are many charities that need help of all kinds rather than cash. You can help in many ways by giving your time rather than money.

2. Each of us is responsible for keeping our financial house in order. Some appeals for help tug on our emotions, but giving should be reasonable, thought out, planned, and no create more financial stress.

3. The needs are ongoing, not isolated one-time events. Every charitable organization I know would rather than small but steady monthly gifts which allow them to plan and allocate resources. It is prudent to budget for giving.

4. Be wise. Sadly there are many swindlers who use the cover of emotional appeals to our sympathy. This is especially prevalent after a natural disaster. It's best to research charities and learn more about them before emotions become involved. A personal unannounced visit can be very insightful. Charities worth your contribution welcome your questions.

5. Involve the whole family if you are in that situation. Children are wise in this area and need to learn how to give responsibly. If you decide as a family to make a sacrifice and give to a charity, then everyone should be in agreement. This is a great way to help children learn to focus on others, perhaps around the world.

A life of gratitude and open-hearted sympathy brings blessings. But we should be wise as we give so our generosity can be sustainable and not cause undue stress.
